About the Job


The Gender and Sexuality Center for Queer and Trans Life is seeking a graduate student to fill our Tongues Untied Intern Program.This student will work directly with the GSC Director and Tongues Untied student program coordinator and other staff to communicate our mission to the diverse members of the communities we serve on and off campus. As one of the representatives of the GSC, the Student Programs and Tongues Untied intern plays a major role in supporting and coordinating signature events through the GSC. Additionally, the Student Programs and Tongues Untied intern is responsible for some event planning and securing keynote speakers for events.Primary Responsibilities:

  • Manage Tongues Untied (TU), a group for Queer and Trans Indigenous People and People of Color
    • Be connected to QTPOC communities on campus and in the Twin Cities to stay up-to-date on relevant community needs and initiatives.
    • Collaborate with GSC leadership to support TU events and programs.
    • Coordinate topics and speakers each semester (both passive and more intentional programs)
    • Work with Social Media Coordinator(s) to ensure all events are being advertised and marketed
    • Outreach
      • Work with other student staff to develop and continue relationship building with student groups, organizations, and clubs across campus
      • Potential to table for the GSC at events, as needed
      • Potential to present across campus on the topic of "GSC 101" in collaboration with the Student Leadership & Outreach Coordinator
      • Clerical/Miscellaneous work
        • Weekly staffing in the GSC Student Lounge
        • Emailing, printing, and organizing tabling materials, as needed
        • Cleaning and organizing of student lounge and office spaces.
        • Other program support and duties as assigned.WORK HOURS: Position will work both set and flexible hours. Position must attend all GSC staff meetings and trainings.COMPENSATION: The intern will receive two payments of $2,500 (one in the fall and the second in spring semester)
          Qualifications


          Required Qualifications:
          • Current UofM graduate student
          • Knowledge, understanding, and willingness to learn and educate about queer and trans-related topics, social justice issues, and the multiple intersectional identities of the LGBTQIA+ community (race, ability, religion, etc.).
          • Creativity in program/event development
          • Strong written and oral communication skills
          • Ability to balance multiple deadlines/project
          • Able to work independently and as a member of a team
          • Willingness to learn, ask for assistance, navigate conflict, and work with groups of people
            Preferred Qualifications:
            • Previous work experience related to the position
            • Involvement with LGBTQIA organizations and/or other multicultural groups
            • Basic computer experience and program knowledge
            • Community-building experience
